Hayden lies at the southwestern end of Hayden Lake, on U.S. Route 95 where Route 41 meets it, four miles north of Interstate 90 and Coeur d’Alene. The lake got its name, so the story goes, from a game of Seven-Up between three settlers in the 1870s. Mat Heyden won, the spelling drifted to Hayden, and Heyden went on to plant the area’s first orchard and farm on the lake’s western shore.
